What are Roofers?

Roofers install or repair the covers that keep an interior building dry and safe. They use different materials such as shingles and bitumen to create a water-proof barrier. This will prevent water from leaking into the building and damaging its structure or contents. Roofers use many different tools and pieces of equipment to cut and shape shingles and to hammer them into place. Some roofers have a specialization in certain roofing styles and materials.

The roofer's duties include talking to clients about their roofing needs and estimating costs for materials and labor. The roofer often works with other construction experts, such as carpenters or electricians, in order to complete the project. Roofers may measure an old roof before installing a brand new one to determine the dimensions and pitch. Then, the roofer will lay layers of material in order to build the protective cover. They start with a layer of vapor barrier before adding the roofing material. Some clients choose shingles, while others may opt for other materials.

A roofer will lay down a one-ply membrane in a waterproof plastic material or rubber on flat roofs or roofs with low slopes. This method is used commonly on commercial roofs. However, it can be used also for residential roofs. Roofers may install metal shingles or clay tiles on steep-pitch roofs. Roofers who specialize in green roofs are able to install soil and plants that reduce heat island effects in urban areas.

The majority of roofs on residential buildings are covered by shingles. To install a roof with shingles, roofers need to prepare the surface first by applying an insulation layer and then spreading a tarlike substance on top. Roofers then nail overlaid strips of shingle on top of insulation. Roofers will then cover the exposed nails or sealant with cement after installing the shingle. Roofers will also install flashing – strips of shingles or metal that are placed around vent pipes (or chimneys) and any other protrusions.

Many roofers like the challenge of working outside, and they prefer warm weather. Snow and rain can seriously slow or even stop roof work. Roofers need to have the ability to work long days, since they usually are on a tight deadline to finish their project before a storm or a snowfall. Roofers need to be quick and precise, especially if they're cutting shingles. In order to access different areas of the roof they need to be able cling to ladders and scaffolding. Roofers often wear safety harnesses on the job.
